What the Roof Deck Needs First
Self-adhered underlayment is only as good as the surface it bonds to. Before it goes down, the crew checks four things.
Solid sheathing
Plywood or OSB that is firmly attached. Soft, rotted or delaminated boards are replaced first.
Clean surface
Old roofing, protruding nails and debris are removed so the membrane can bond and lay flat.
Dry deck
The membrane won't bond reliably to wet wood, so installation waits until the deck dries.
Right temperature
Each membrane has a minimum application temperature set by its manufacturer, which matters on cool mornings.

- The underlayment usually goes down the same day as tear-off. Many residential roofs close in 1 to 3 days in total; roof size, deck repairs, weather and inspections can extend that.
- Can underlayment be installed in the rain?
- No. Self-adhered underlayment needs a clean, dry deck to bond properly. Crews stop for rain and lightning and continue once the deck has dried.
- Does my old roof have to come off?
- In most cases, yes. A self-adhered membrane has to bond directly to a clean, solid deck, and tear-off is also the only way to find and replace damaged sheathing. What your roof needs is confirmed during the inspection.
- What happens if the roof deck is damaged?
- Soft or rotted sheathing is replaced before the underlayment goes on. This can add time, which is why the final schedule is confirmed after tear-off.
- How long can underlayment stay exposed before the panels go on?
- It depends on the product: each underlayment has a maximum sun-exposure time set by its manufacturer. On a fast-track schedule the panels usually go on within days.
